On the heels of Independence Day, it’s a perfect time to reflect on what makes our nation great and how we can draw inspiration from that greatness in our own pursuits, in all aspects of our life.

Independence Day isn’t just about fireworks and barbecues — it’s a celebration of our collective strength, resilience, and the spirit of unity that binds us together as a nation. It’s about our boldness in embarking on an experiment in self-governance. It’s a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who came before us to secure the freedoms many enjoy today. And just like on a sports team, where each player has a crucial role, our nation’s progress is built on the contributions of every citizen, regardless of background or belief.
As a coach, I often emphasize the importance of teamwork. It’s not just about individual performance; it’s about how we come together, support each other, and work toward a common goal. Our nation’s history is a testament to this principle — from the founding fathers drafting the Declaration of Independence to the brave men and women who defend our freedoms today, teamwork has always been at the heart of our unified success.
Independence Day also teaches us the value of perseverance and resilience. Our nation has faced its share of challenges and setbacks, yet through it all, we’ve remained steadfast in our commitment to freedom and equality. Oftentimes this comes from our need to work together to make it through a common problem. I used to see this spirit in athletes during practices and games — the determination to overcome obstacles, the willingness to push beyond limits, picking each other up, and the belief that together, we can achieve anything. I sometimes wonder if we would be a bit more understanding of our differences if we thought of ourselves as a team more often.
The Fourth of July for some may serve as a call to action for the future. It challenges us to uphold the values that define us as a nation — equality, justice, and opportunity for all. Just as we set goals and strategies for our team, we must also set goals and strategies for our country and our state, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the freedoms we hold dear.
As we gather with family and friends this summer, remember the lessons of teamwork and unity that have shaped our nation’s history. Let’s celebrate not only how far we’ve come but also how far we can go when we work together toward a common purpose. Whether on the field or in our communities, let’s embody the spirit of cooperation and collaboration that defines us as Americans.
I hope everyone had a happy and safe Independence Day. On our nation’s 248th birthday, we all deserve to be able to take a step back, and cheers to our accomplishments. As always, if you have any questions, concerns or are looking for more information, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
