Richard E. Bayles
OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Richard E. Bayles, 93, of Fern Park Avenue, passed away Sunday July 14, 2024 at the Southern Maine Medical Center.
He was born April 28, 1931 in Providence, R.I., the son of Leo and Ruth Emmitt Bayles. Richard attended local schools in Rhode Island and graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel.
Richard graduated from Brown University and subsequently received his master’s degree from Harvard University. Richard then served in the U.S. Army.
After his service, he began his long career as an actuary. In 1996, he retired from Savings Bank Life Insurance and moved to Maine.
Richard was a member of OOB Animal Watch and Good Shepherd Parish, where he enjoyed singing in the choir. Richard was a life long fan of the Boston Red Sox and could recall minute details from games played in the 1940s. He regaled his family and friends with puns and enjoyed Scrabble and Sudoku puzzles. He took great pride in his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Margaret Bayles of Old Orchard Beach; two daughters, Wynne Kleinberg of Silver Spring, Md. and husband Robert, and Deborah Bayles of Littleton, Mass., two sons, Gerald Bayles of Sterling, Va. and wife Patricia, and Keith Bayles of Brookline, Mass.; and four grandchildren, Eric Jarvis, Nathan Jarvis and wife Ashley Geohaghan, Marie Bayles, and Alexander Bayles.
Visiting hours are to be held Friday July 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Dennett, Craig and Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St., Saco.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday July 20 at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret’s Church, Old Orchard Beach.
Burial will be at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in New Market, N.H.
