SARASOTA, Fla. – Joan passed away on July 1, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with kidney disease. She was born Sept. 19, 1941, in Portland, Maine to Florence and Edward Whittier.
Joan grew up in South Portland and graduated from South Portland High. She met her husband Phillip in high school and they were married. Together they raised three children, Michael, Melissa and David.
Joan worked in the Portland school system for 20-plus years. In retirement she enjoyed time with her grandchildren and was a wonderful and loving Nana.
Joan moved to Sarasota as a snowbird from Maine, but eventually made it her year round home as she loved the warmer weather.
Joan was predeceased by her son Michael S.; husband, Phillip; and parents, Florence and Edward.
She is survived by son, David Jones, daughter, Melissa Jones and her partner Susan; grandsons, Michael and Benjamin Jones.
A private burial will be held later.
