Scarborough junior Emerson Flaker was named Tuesday as Maine’s Outdoor Track Gatorade Player of the Year, becoming the first Red Storm girls’ track athlete to be honored.

Flaker won the 100, 200 and 400 at the Class A state meet earlier this month, helping Scarborough win the team state title. Flaker holds the state’s best times in all three sprints this spring and also anchored the Red Storm’s first-place 4×400 relay team. Flaker was fifth in the 400 at New Englands with a personal best time of 56.06 seconds.

Flaker also plays for the two-time reigning Class A champion girls’ soccer team (she scored the winning goal in overtime in the regional final last fall) and for Scarborough’s basketball team. She is the school’s treasurer and has volunteered locally as a youth basketball camp coach, as well as donated her time to multiple community service initiatives through her school’s Key Club. Flaker is an ‘A’ student.

“Emerson is a dedicated athlete who’s put in the time to become the accomplished runner that she is,” said Scarborough coach Denise Curry. “She always gets her workouts in.”
