
Walter Eugene Braley Jr.
WINDHAM – Walter Eugene Braley Jr. “Junie” born in Mount Desert, on Oct. 10, 1931, to Walter and Eva (Cirard) Braley. He met his wife, Nina (Meserve) and they married in July 1956. Walter passed away peacefully on Father’s Day June 16, 2024, at the age of 92 at his Windham home.
He moved to Scarborough when he was 10 years old. He attended Scarborough schools until he entered the Marine Corps He earned the rank of Sergeant. He was a proud Korean War Veteran and loved serving for his country. His jobs consisted of Delaware Feed Grain Store, truck driver for Maine Egg, dog groomer for Dutton Animal Hospital in Saco and at the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook, which he retired from after 35 years. He also worked as a Maine State Humane Agent during this time. He loved animals and had many of his own throughout his life.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Westbrook holding board positions and other committees. After retirement, he volunteered for the Bruce Roberts Fund and Meals on Wheels. He was very active in the VFW and American Legion in Windham.
He was a loving husband, dad, and grampy. He loved getting together with the family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the camp on Thomas Pond with his family. He liked to be funny, tease and competitively play games. He was a good checker player, playing volleyball and playing dominos. He was always ready to go out to eat, take a ride or have ice cream. His favorite foods were seafood and orange pineapple ice cream. He was loved by many and will surely be missed. He was quite the character.
He is survived by his wife, Nina A (Meserve) Braley. Daughters: LuAnn McLaughlin of Buxton, Charlene and husband Timothy Fraser of Gray, Lisa Spearin of Scarborough, Cheryl Braley of Standish, son Rodney Braley and partner Jill Potvin of Windham. Grandchildren: Lyndsey McLaughlin of Buxton, Justin Spearin of Gorham, Cara (Fraser) and Matthew Deister of California, Jeremy and Natalie Fraser, of Florida, Karina Braley of Colorado, Rodney Braley Jr. of Standish. Great-grandchildren: Brooklyn, Justin and Cameron Spearin, Kaiden Crockett, Jason Braley, Ella, Ainsley, Knox and Rhys Deister.
The family would like to thank the Beacon Hospice Team for their support, love and care. He was a favorite and he teased them right to the end.
A service will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at First Baptist Church on 733 Main Street in Westbrook at 11am. Celebration of life follows at the church until 2pm. Interment with Military Honors will be for the Family Only at the South Gorham Cemetery.
