Flag Day was declared by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 and was officially established a national observance in 1949. The date commemorates the 1777 anniversary of the Second Continental Congress’s Flag Resolution to adopt the red stripes and white stars in a blue field, like a “new constellation.”
In his proclamation, Wilson said this was a day to “rededicate ourselves to the nation” and “stand with united hearts for our country.” While June 14 is a great day for the Stars and Stripes and national unity, a flagpole on your property could be a fun way to express yourself year-round.
