William “Bill” Hilfrank

FALMOUTH – William “Bill” Hilfrank passed away on Monday May 27, 2024 at Ocean View in Falmouth.

He was born June 20, 1927, in Boston Mass., the son of William and Marjorie Hilfrank of Freedom, N.H.

A graduate of Melrose, Mass. High School, upon his 18th birthday, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy. When discharged he enrolled in Syracuse University’s Forestry School. During his sophomore year, he received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy where he graduated with a B.S. degree in 1952. He circumvented the globe twice (on the destroyer Forrest Royal and ice breaker USS Glacier) with shipmates including Admiral Bryd and retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of Commander.

After 34 years of Executive Management at the S. D. Warren Co., he continued his civic activities as a member of Falmouth’s Planning and Zoning boards, and a Trustee of both the Falmouth Memorial Library and Maine Audubon Society.

While he very much enjoyed “working in the woods” of his 55 acres on Mast Road, his true joy was his wife and five children.

He is survived by Brenda and Robert Lavalette, Becki and Sherman Ramsey, Betsey Hilfrank, Bruce and Peggy Hilfrank, Brian and Tracy Hilfrank; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Marcia Forrest.

A private graveside service will be held on Friday June 14 at the Blanchard Cemetery in Falmouth.

Arrangements in the care of Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home Portland.
