SARASOTA, Fla. – Robert Edward Stanton died peacefully, surrounded by books, music, and beautiful art on May 31, 2024 at his home in Sarasota, Fla.
Robert was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on Aug. 19, 1937 to Stephen and Irene (Rahko) Stanton and moved with his family to Maine as a child.
After graduating from Thornton Academy in Saco and earning a B.A. from Bates College in Maine, Robert received an M.A. in English from the University of Cincinnati. Robert spent decades as a professor and taught at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla. for nearly 30 years.
Robert spent many happy summers with his family and friends at his cabin in Maine where they shared the joys of the sauna and plenty of smoked salmon.
Robert will be missed by his family, friends, and students.
He is survived by his son, John (Miya) of Washington; daughter, Emily (Hedley) and grandsons Liam and Rhys Abernethy, of Belfast, Northern Ireland; and brother, William Stanton (Marjorie) of Bowdoinham.
