BROWNS 20, BEARS 17: Joe Flacco passed for 374 yards and led Cleveland to 13 points in the fourth quarter, including Dustin Hopkins’ go-ahead 34-yard field goal with 32 seconds left, and the Browns withstood a Hail Mary on the final play to beat Chicago.
Flacco was intercepted three times but made some brilliant throws in the closing minutes to rally the Browns, including a 51-yard touchdown pass to Amari Cooper with 3:08 left that tied it at 17-all.
The Browns (9-5) got the ball back with 1:50 remaining, and the 38-year-old Flacco, who was signed on Nov. 20 and made his third start for Cleveland, completed two passes to tight end David Njoku for 65 yards to set up Hopkins’ kick.
After blowing a 17-7, fourth-quarter lead, the Bears (5-9) nearly pulled off a stunning finish.
On the final play, Chicago quarterback Justin Fields lofted a pass from the 45-yard line to the end zone into a pack of players. Two Browns defenders batted it down, but it went directly to Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney, who was lying on his back. The ball bounced in and out of Mooney’s hands, and he kicked it into the air, allowing Browns safety D’Anthony Bell to intercept it.
DOLPHINS 30, JETS 0: Raheem Mostert scored two more touchdowns to set Miami’s single-season record with 20, Tua Tagovailoa threw for 224 yards and a score, and the Dolphins (10-4) routed the visiting Jets (5-9) without star receiver Tyreek Hill.
Hill, who entered Week 15 as the NFL’s leading receiver, missed his first game as a member of the Dolphins after injuring his left ankle in a loss to the Titans.
His absence made room for a standout game from Jaylen Waddle, who had a season-high 142 yards on eight catches.
Meanwhile, the very slim opening the Jets had of keeping their playoffs hopes alive closed with an emphatic dud. And it might have ended the chances of Aaron Rodgers making a late-season return from a torn Achilles tendon.
Rodgers, looking to make the quickest known recovery from a torn Achilles tendon among professional athletes, had been targeting the Jets’ game against Washington on Dec. 24 as his potential comeback. He still needs to be cleared by doctors and has said he also must feel he can protect himself on the field. But he also said New York would need to remain in the playoff hunt for a come back to make sense.
The quarterback who replaced Rodgers in the season opener, Zach Wilson, is in concussion protocol after leaving Sunday’s game late in the second quarter.
Trevor Siemian replaced Wilson on the Jets’ final series of the first half, and CBS originally reported that Wilson went into the locker room early to get hydrated. The Jets later announced that Wilson had a head injury before ruling him out in the third quarter.
TEXANS 19, TITANS 16: Ka’imi Fairbairn kicked a 54-yard field goal as time expired in overtime, and Houston (8-6) rallied from a 13-point deficit without quarterback C.J. Stroud to beat Tennessee (5-9) in Nashville.
Case Keenum, making his first start since Week 17 of the 2021 season for Cleveland, threw for 229 yards and helped Houston stay in the hunt for an AFC wild-card berth.
Titans rookie quarterback Will Levis left because an apparent injury to his left leg with 1:49 remaining in overtime after being sacked for the seventh time.
PANTHERS 9, FALCONS 7: Eddy Pineiro kicked a 23-yard field goal as time expired and Carolina (2-12) dealt a huge blow to visiting Atlanta’s playoff hopes while ending a six-game losing streak.
Atlanta (6-8) dropped a game behind New Orleans and Tampa Bay for first place in the NFC South. Carolina still has the NFL’s worst record, by one game over New England, but Chicago owns the Panthers’ first-round pick in the 2024 draft because of a trade before the 2023 draft in which Carolina moved up to select Alabama quarterback Bryce Young.
NOTES
BENGALS: Cincinnati receiver Ja’Marr Chase is day to day because of a sprained shoulder joint, Coach Zac Taylor.
That leaves Chase questionable for the Bengals’ next game at Pittsburgh as Cincinnati (8-6) fights to stay in the AFC playoff race. Chase was hurt in Saturday’s 27-24 overtime win against the Vikings.
