Robert A. Schafer
KENNEBUNK – Robert A. Schafer, 84, a resident of Kennebunk, passed away Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, surrounded by family in the comfort of his son’s home in Poestenkill, N.Y.
Bob was born May 5, 1939 in Albany, N.Y., the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Richter Schafer, and is a graduate of Paul Smith’s College for Forestry in Saranac Lake, N.Y.
A veteran of the US Navy from 1957 to 1959, Bob served as a radioman on the Tank Landing Ship USS Vernon County, with his twin brother Bill. Following their discharge, they formed Schafer and Schafer Surveying in Latham, N.Y. in 1971, which they operated until retirement in 1995.
He was a member of the NY State Land Surveyors Society, and also served a term as president of Paul Smith College Alumni Council.
Bob enjoyed taking road trips and camping, especially in his beloved White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Survivors include his children, Todd Schafer of Poesterkill, N.Y., Karyn Schafer Campbell and her husband Alex Campbell of London; grandchildren Maya and Lewis Campbell; his twin brother Bill Schafer of Kennebunk; and the mother of his children, Christine Vorce.
A time of visitation will be held 9:30 -10:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Martha’s Church, 30 Portland Rd, Kennebunk. Interment with Military Honors will be in Southern Maine Veteran’s Cemetery, Springvale.
