I am excited to support Eleni Richardson, at-large candidate for the South Portland School Board. I met her 10 years ago, instantly struck by her engaging combination of humor, warmth and sharp insight. When she moved across the street in 2015, I witnessed her ability to build neighborhood community. Like many, she raised her children through a pandemic and integrated them into a changed school landscape. She knows now is the time, more important than ever, to really hear from teachers and parents. Which is why she spent hours and hours talking with parents and teachers to understand district needs. South Portland is currently reconfiguring elementary school boundaries – imagine you are a parent or teacher in those schools and your input has not been sought. Moving forward, Eleni Richardson will ensure community engagement (especially of those most impacted), communication and transparency. She’ll be an extraordinary school board member.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
