Cape Elizabeth will take on the electrical costs for a temporary ice rink at Gull Crest Fields this winter.
The Cape Elizabeth Town Council last week voted 6-1 to cover electricity expenses of up to $35,000 for the nonprofit Cape Community Arena Group’s rink this winter, with Councilor Gretchen Noonan opposed.
The town estimates that by using its more favorable municipal rate, the cost will be about $32,000, roughly $43,000 less than what the arena group would pay under its own contract.
The arena group built and operated a temporary rink last year with one donor covering the costs for the entire season. This year, they will rely on proceeds from fundraising, sponsorships and ice time rentals to run the rink, the latter of which group board members say they would like to avoid.
