Deane W. Roberts

SOUTH PORTLAND – Deane Warren Roberts, 86, passed away peacefully on Oct. 3, 2023, at his home in South Portland after a fall he incurred.

Deane was born in 1937 in Portland. He graduated from high school in 1955. He then entered college to study animal husbandry but had to leave college to return home to help on the family poultry farm in Cumberland.

Deane and Pat got married in 1957, started growing their family, and eventually took over the farm. After many years in the egg business, he saw the competition heading towards automation, so they decided it was time to move on. In 1971 they had an opportunity to purchase a horse farm in Falmouth, Hurricane Valley Stables, and did so. There they taught horseback riding, trained, and boarded horses. They had “the stables” until 1998, when they sold the business and retired to Wilsons Mills for nine years, after which they moved back to Cumberland, then North Yarmouth, and finally settling in South Portland.

Deane loved his dog, Tigger, horse shows, polo, camping, and hiking.

Deane was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Patricia; and both parents, Byrle and J. Philburn Roberts.

He is survived by the four children Timothy Roberts, Cindy Irek and husband Adrian, Rene Hallett and husband Richard, and James Roberts; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters and brothers-in law, Donna and Larry and Sherry and Jeff; along with several nieces and nephews and their children.

A very special thank you to the staff at Harbor Chase for their support shown and care provided to Deane in his final days.

A public celebration of life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 19 at the Congregational Church in Cumberland.

In lieu of flowers,

the family requests that donations be made to Affinity Care of Maine in South Portland

in memory of Deane.
