Richard “Dick” A. Gaisford
TOPSHAM – After a long life, Richard “Dick” A. Gaisford, 93, passed away peacefully, at home with his family on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023.
He was born on May 14, 1930, the son of Rev. Albert A. and Inez E. Gaisford. He graduated from Standish High School in 1947 and Portland Junior College in 1949. He then joined the United States Navy. After serving for four years, he attended Bryant College,
graduating with high honors and his degree in accounting.
On July 10, 1954, Dick married Lorraine M. Smith of Standish. This past July they celebrated their 69th anniversary. They had two daughters and a son.
Dick worked for Millett, Fish and Dresser in Portland for five years. The family moved to Norway in 1962 where he established his own successful CPA practice.
Dick was a very active member of his community. He served as trustee and director at Norway Savings Bank, director at Stephens Memorial Hospital, president and Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis, treasurer and deacon at Norway Second Congregational Church plus was a member of SCORE. He was a 68-year member of Masonic Lodge #107, Scottish Rite, as well as a member of Kora Temple Shrine.
He enjoyed summers spent at camp on Norway Lake, time on the golf course, skiing winters and many trips with his wife to Prince Edward Island, across the United States, St. Maarten, and Europe. A lifelong avid reader, he always had a book beside his chair.
Dick leaves his wife, Lorraine; daughter, Diane and her husband, Jack Sharkey; grandchildren Nathan Suomela, Megan Littlefield, Raija Suomela, Tyler Littlefield; three great-grandchildren.
Dick was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Priscilla Heggeman; son, Scott, and daughter, Barbara.
A graveside service will take place Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Standish Village Cemetery on Oak Hill Road.
In case of inclement weather, services will be held at the Standish Congregational Church on Oak Hill Road at 2 p.m.
Arrangements are under the care of Funeral Alternatives Group, 46 Bath Rd., Brunswick, ME 04011.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in his memory to establish a scholarship for a graduating senior at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.
