The Scarborough Fire Department credited smoke alarms for allowing an occupant of a home on Minuteman Drive to evacuate safely during a fire last week.
An occupant who was on the second floor and their dog were not harmed in the Oct. 4 fire, which firefighters contained to the first-floor kitchen area, according to a press release.
“October is National Fire Prevention Month and this incident is a reminder, yet again, of the importance of having working smoke alarms in your home,” Deputy Fire Chief John Brennan said in the press release. “There is no doubt that working smoke alarms provided early notification to the occupant of this home, allowing them to safely evacuate.”
Scarborough firefighters arrived at the scene six minutes after the initial call, the press release said. The department was assisted by firefighters from Portland, South Portland and Biddeford.
