Alvin “Al” John Bates
ALFRED – Alvin “Al” John Bates of Alfred passed on Sept. 30, 2023, at home with family at his side. He was born in Barnet, Vt. on Feb. 18, 1935, son of Edward and Aurora (Cyr) Bates.
He was a wonderful husband and father and will be missed so much by so many people. He loved the outdoors, really enjoyed hunting and fishing, snowmobiling, riding his motorcycle, and spending time with his family and friends. He worked 38 years as superintendent of heavy construction building bridges for Callahan Bros and Reed and Reed before retiring in 2003.
He leaves his loving wife Mabel Bates; children Tanya Bates and Debbie Torrey; grandchildren Elizabeth Torry, Jenny Santos, Katie Soucy, T.J. Soucy, Charles Davis IV, Peter Bates, Jr., Danny and Candace Mushero, Rose Green, and Daisy Bates; 15 great-grandchildren; nephews John and Mathew Corson, Rodney Bates, nieces Barbara Hinerth; brother-in-law Victor Toby and daughter-in-law Donna Bates.
He was predeceased by a daughter Vanessa Bates; three sons Peter, David, and Tommy Bates; Grandson Brad Bates Allaire and Scott Alvin Bates; Sisters Rose Corson and Betty Sargent; brothers Paul Cyr and Edward Bates, Jr; parents Edward and Aurora Bates; sister-in-law Yolanda Bates; nephews Michael Bates and Steven Corson.
