Virginia M. Payson
GORHAM – Virginia M. Payson, 96, born in Standish, daughter of Richard and Mary (Meserve) Farrell, passed on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023.
“Ginny” graduated from South Portland High School in 1946 and attended Northeastern Business College. She married Stanley E. Payson on June 3, 1950.
She was active in Girl Scouts and St. Margaret’s Women’s Sodality. While a parishioner of St. Margaret’s in Old Orchard Beach, she taught religion classes several years and also served on the Parish Council. She was an officer in the Pine Point Community Credit Union and was active in the Parent Teachers Organization of Blue Point School.
She retired from Snow Food Products where she was an accounting clerk for several years. She was a parishioner of St. Maximilian Kolbe before moving to Gorham House, where she resided for the past 10 years. She enjoyed traveling and crocheting afghans for all her grandchildren, relatives and friends in nursing homes.
Surviving are her three sons, Edward of Scarborough, Gregory of Yarmouth and Christopher of Bolton, Mass., and two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Janice) Roy of Gorham and Mrs. William (Cheryl) Clark of Old Orchard Beach; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years; and her sister, Elizabeth Waltman.
Visiting hours will be Monday, Sept. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough. A mass of Christian burial at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in Scarborough will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Scarborough Memorial Cemetery.
