William “Ted” Robert Cunningham
SCARBOROUGH – William Robert Cunningham, 81, died on Sept. 5, 2023 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
William, or better known by nickname “Ted” was born on Feb. 22, 1942 in Portland and grew up in Saco. Son of William G. Cunningham and Elizabeth Smith Cunningham, he was known for his quiet, kind and caring manner and will be missed by many. He was proud of his military service and the Law Enforcement mission to “Protect and Serve”.
He was a career Army Officer, retiring after 24 years of service that included two tours in Vietnam and one assignment to the 7th Army Training Command, Grafenwoehr, Germany. Upon retirement his awards included the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, (Second Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation Medal (Second Oak Leaf Cluster), Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Service Reserve Medal and Overseas Service Bars. He was a graduate of Wofford College, Spartanburg, S.C. and the Army Command and General Staff College, Leavenworth, Kan.
He leaves his wife of 54 years, Mary Lou; sons Andrew and Lucas, daughters-in-law Sara and Corinne; grandchildren Liam, Fynn and Paige; a sister, Carol Linda Williams in South Carolina; a niece and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Congregational Church of Wells (1695 Post Rd., Wells, ME 04090). Visitation will begin at 12 p.m. until the service. Burial with military honors will follow at Ocean View Cemetery in Wells.
