ARUNDEL – Log Cabin Road has featured a detour for several weeks as work continues on replacing a decaying culvert. Log Cabin Road is a main artery from Route 1 to Kennebunkport.

Paul Merrill, director of communications at the Maine Department of Transportation, said that the road is being torn up to replace and expand a deteriorating culvert. He said the current culvert is only 4 feet wide, while the new one will be 8 feet high, 13 feet wide and made of concrete. The department of transportation expects the new culvert to last a good deal longer.
Construction on Log Cabin Road began Aug. 7 and the road was detoured and closed to traffic by Aug. 14. The scheduled completion date for the work – performed by RJ Grondin & Sons of Gorham – is Oct. 6. That makes the construction just about halfway done, with three weeks left to go.
Grondin & Sons was contracted for $493,506, Merrill said in an email. To his knowledge, all of the amount owed to Grondin & Sons is coming from state and federal funding, without any contributions from grants.
“The department generally looks to upsize culverts in order to create more resiliency during extreme weather events and improve fish passage,” Merrill said.
