A section of Route 302 in Naples had to be shut down Monday night after an SUV crashed into a utility pole, knocking out power to more than 1,100 Central Maine Power Co. customers in Harrison and Naples.
Ronald Spiller, 58, of Waterford was traveling west on Route 302 around 8:40 p.m. Monday when his Ford Escape left the road and hit the pole. Driver inattention or distraction may have contributed to the crash, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office, which responded to the scene, closed Route 302 in Naples between Harrison Road and Casco Road. The highway was reopened just before 5 a.m. Tuesday.
A dispatcher was unable to provide any details Monday night but WGME-TV reported that wires fell across the road when the SUV hit the utility pole.
Lakes Region Fire Rescue News tweeted that the SUV became suspended in the air following the crash and the driver had to be extricated.
Police said Spiller was evaluated on the scene for injured and was not taken to the hospital.
Emergency responders from the Casco and Naples fire departments responded.
