A series of crashes in heavy rain on Interstate-295 in Freeport on Sunday afternoon snarled traffic for more than an hour.
Maine State Police troopers, along with emergency personnel from Freeport and Yarmouth, responded to initial reports of a crash involving eight vehicles in the northbound lane near mile marker 22.
Upon arrival, responders discovered five separate accidents involving 14 vehicles across a half-mile stretch, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Monday.
Heavy rain and heavy traffic were factors, Moss said.
One person was taken by ambulance to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick and treated for minor injuries.
Five vehicles, including a small boat and trailer, needed to be towed from the crash site.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
