Gorham police are searching for a 31-year-old man who they say threatened to shoot a family member Sunday night before going into the woods behind the University of Southern Maine campus.
Police say Ryan Ramsey, 31, of Portland called police at around 7:20 p.m. Sunday and said that he was walking on the trails and had a 9 mm handgun and threatened to shoot law enforcement. He said he did not want to be found.
Officers from several departments and K-9 units searched the area, but Ramsey remained at large Monday.
Police are warning people not to approach Ramsey, whom they describe as suicidal, “not rational” and heavily intoxicated. He told police he was drunk and had been using meth, OxyContin and heroin.
USM sent out an alert Sunday evening saying the Gorham campus was closed and asking anyone on campus to shelter in place. The campus reopened at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, but police said members of the public should remain on alert.
Ramsey is described as a white man, 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighing approximately 200 pounds with a shaved head and brown eyes. He has a Christian cross tattoo on the inside of his left forearm and was last known to be wearing all-black clothing and a camouflage hat, police said.
Anyone with information or who spots Ramsey is asked to notify Gorham police at 893-2810 or call 911.
