Regarding the issue of the Maine state flag, I am writing to stress the importance of historically accurate choices and our state image. The 1901-1909 flag realistically portrays our stately pine tree. One doesn’t see this flag often, though I have seen several here in Bath. There are two distinct differences in this original design when compared to the modern, commercially produced flag that is now being considered by the Legislature – or the public, if it goes to a referendum.

Notice the tree has a graceful rounded crown. It also shows the root structure. Regardless of what the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry says, the design being considered does not depict a pine.

The design uses a profile of a spruce or a fir, both of which have pointed tops. I would hope the pine could be shown some respect. Changing our state flag is no small act. Please respect history and our grand species of the woodlands.
