AUGUSTA — An Augusta man has been charged with aggravated criminal mischief for vandalizing a memorial to law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty over Memorial Day Weekend.
Justin Larrabee, 39, was issued a summons Friday after police searched a Riverside Road residence at about 3 p.m., according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The Class C charge also reflects Larrabee’s alleged involvement in “another vandalism incident in the city which took place a few days following the incident at the Capitol complex,” Moss wrote in a news release Friday evening. She did not specify where the second incident occurred.
The Capitol Police and the Augusta Police Department led the investigation.
“On behalf of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association and the Augusta Police, I want to recognize the investigators with the Augusta and Capitol Police for the countless hours they spent to bring this investigation to a successful resolution,” said Augusta Police Chief Jared Mills.
The memorial was vandalized May 28 at about 3:45 a.m.
“I am tremendously grateful to the team of officers from both departments who worked this case tirelessly,” said Capitol Police Chief Matthew Clancy. “It was a textbook example of interagency cooperation.”
Workers cleaned the red spray paint off the memorial Thursday.
