Kyle Rohrer Slayback
PORTLAND – Kyle Rohrer Slayback, 84, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2023, with family at her side. Born in Indianapolis and lovingly adopted by Frances and William Rohrer, she was soon joined by brother Dean. As a child, Kyle’s family moved to Bronxville, N.Y., where her father worked for the N.Y. Central Railroad. Frequent visits to “the city” included many Broadway shows, museum visits and other cultural events. A graduate of Roosevelt High School in 1957, Kyle was voted “Wittiest” by her peers and until the end, always found a way to make those around her laugh.
Kyle found her way to Connecticut for a few years before settling in Ramsey, N.J., to raise her son, Peter and daughter, Krista. Kyle loved people and found wonderful connections and dear friends through the Newcomers Club, the Beautification Committee and the Democratic Club, amongst others. In 1989, Kyle moved to Maine where she was active in politics and enriched the lives of women through her work with Women Unlimited and Women, Work and Community (New Ventures). Kyle’s love of travel brought her across Europe, through the Costa Rican jungle, the Southwestern US and up and down the coast of Maine. She was an active and dedicated member of Women in Harmony in Portland for 25 years, which fulfilled her love of singing and music.
Kyle always embraced extended time spent with her family during the summers on the coast of Maine, especially Chebeague Island. Her time with her children, son-in-law Neil, three adored grandchildren, Quinn, Owen and Kate and the family dogs (Luna, Bella, Fauci and Orzo) was a highlight in her later years, bringing her great joy and pride. Always up for a good laugh, a good party or a bowl of ice cream, she will be missed by her family and many friends.
