Helen Louise (Howell) Knapp

PORTLAND – Helen Louise (Howell) Knapp, 92, of Portland, passed away May 25, 2023.

Helen was born on July 10, 1930 in Boston, Mass. to Fred and Dorothy (Donovan) Howell. The family moved to Munjoy Hill, Portland in 1935. Helen graduated from Portland High School (1947) and Westbrook Junior College (1949). She worked at the Cumberland County Probation Office. On Sept. 22, 1950, Helen married John J. Knapp, Jr., at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. They had five children and settled in Portland, buying their home on Rosedale Street in 1959. Helen was a long-time communicant of St. Pius X Church.

Helen was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Fred A. Howell, Jr.; her infant daughter, Paula Marie; and her husband of 65 years, John.

Helen is survived by John J. Knapp, III and Monica Strobel of Bowdoin, David Knapp of Steep Falls, Peter Knapp of Portland, Judy Knapp of South Portland and Kevin Knapp of Standish.

A time of visitation will be held at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland on June 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. immediately followed by a committal service at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
