Anthony “Tony” Michael Carter
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Anthony “Tony” Carter died unexpectedly in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 13, 2023. He was born on Sept. 14, 1987, in Portland, Maine, to Richard Carter Jr. and Betsy Rolfe Carter. Tony grew up in Portland and attended Portland schools, graduating from Portland High School in 2006.
He attended and graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design, where he met Melissa Wagner, the love of his life. Tony also furthered his arts education in other programs in California and Singapore, innovating at every turn.
Tony followed his own path and had a generous heart. Even his huge personality couldn’t contain his benevolence. He put his thought and focus on other people and had a particular soft spot for animals, as shown by his devotion to his late dog Duke, for whom he composed many silly but loving ditties.
A talented and creative mind, Tony had many artistic skills and made a living from illustration and design. He would frequently showcase his talents by drawing on walls; he even drew the Vitruvian Man on the walls of his childhood bedroom. He loved music and taught himself to play guitar and piano. A natural athlete like his father, Tony enjoyed long-distance running and completed a half-marathon. He applied his natural ingenuity to everything from his artwork to his stellar cooking.
He was predeceased by his father, Richard (Rico) E. Carter, Jr. He is survived by his beloved and devoted fiancee, Melissa Wagner, and their dog Hank; mother, Betsy Rolfe Carter; sister Jamie Logan (husband Bill); nephew Bill Logan; grandmother Rose Carter; close cousin Tristan Rolfe; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and great friends.
A celebration of life will be held at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland, Maine on June 3, 2023, time TBD.
