Madeline Mayo, 12, of South Portland, is to attend the renowned Interlochen Arts Camp. Interlochen, located in northern Michigan, is the nation’s premier multidisciplinary summer arts program for young artists in grades 3 through 12. Mayo will be enrolled in the Orchestra Program.
“Participating in the orchestra means a lot to me,” said Mayo. “Being a part of a group with so many talented and dedicated people really inspires you to keep going forward with your passion for music. Also playing in a group is a team effort so when the group succeeds everyone is so happy and proud of each other. It’s a really great environment to be a part of.”
Mayo currently attends North Yarmouth Academy, playing in the orchestra. She was concertmistress in the Maine Music Educators Association District II Instrumental Honors Music Festival. This summer will be her fourth at Interlochen, and has previously attended programs at the New England Suzuki Institute, Kneisel Hall and Southern Maine String Camp.
“I am extremely excite,” Mayo said. “I love Interlochen and all of the people there, so going back will be amazing. I am excited to see all the friends I have made there and meet my new teachers for this year.”
“We are happy and excited for Madeline to attend Interlochen for the fourth year,” said Mayo’s parents, Lisa and Eric Mayo. “She has enjoyed her experiences there and made some great friends. We are very proud of her and thrilled that she has such a fantastic opportunity.”
Artists from around the world are alumni of Interlochen, including about 17 percent of the nation’s professional orchestra musicians. Classes, electives, and performances serve to teach the students.
“Supporting music and the arts is very important for children and our community,” said Lisa and Eric Mayo. “Now more than ever we need to find ways for folks to come together. Attend a concert, go to a school play, support your kids if they want to try an instrument. It all contributes to a stronger, inclusive community.
“I am so glad a place like Interlochen exists,” said Madeline Mayo. “It is an incredible learning environment with so many great people and opportunities. I am so thankful for this opportunity and I can’t wait for camp.”
