WINDHAM — It’s not that the Falmouth girls’ lacrosse team felt like it played poorly in the first half of Tuesday’s Class A game at Windham. The Navigators had a four-goal lead at the break. It’s just that they knew they could play better.

In the second half, the Navigators did.

Falmouth pulled away in the second half, scoring seven consecutive goals to pull away and earn the 18-9 win.

It was the seventh straight win for Falmouth (7-1) since losing the season opener to undefeated defending state champion Kennebunk. The loss snapped Windham’s four-game winning streak. The Eagles are now 7-3.

“Since Kennebunk, we’ve come into a lot of these games confident. We’re trying to stay humble and hungry. In the second half, we kind of hit the reset. That (first half) was not our best half,” said Sloane Ginevan, a Falmouth senior and co-captain. “We did some things we didn’t expect for them to happen. We were kind of lazy in some areas. We had to get back to playing our game.”

Ginevan scored four of her five goals in the second half. Her goal on a free position with 16:20 left in the second half sparked the Navigators 7-0 run and gave them a 12-7 lead. When Lucy Taylor scored her sixth and final goal with 5:30 left, it gave Falmouth an 18-7 lead.

Windham Coach Matt Perkins said his team made small mistakes that turned into big scoring chances for Falmouth.

“They were winning the ground balls in front of the cage,” Perkins said. “Little turnovers, little stuff. I love our hustle, the kids really get after it and we have a young team. When you play a great team, you can’t give them multiple chances in front of the goalie. You’ve got to win the ground balls.”

Likewise, Falmouth Coach Ashley Pullen felt her team was inconsistent in the first half.

“We talked a little bit at halftime about coming into the second half composed and calm and poised without a frantic energy,” Pullen said. “We didn’t do a lot of fast breaking in the first half, and we were able to do some of that in the second half. That’s typically a big spark for our team.”

Falmouth opened the game hot, scoring four goals in the first five minutes to take a 4-0 lead. The Eagles rallied and stayed close, and freshman Neve Ledbetter’s goal with 4:56 left in the first half cut Falmouth’s lead to 7-5. The Navigators answered quickly with goals from Taylor and Ginevan for a 9-5 halftime lead.

Maeve Ginevan and Maisy Clement each scored three goals for Falmouth. Ledbetter lead Windham with four goals.

Riley Small made 10 saves in net for the Eagles. Falmouth goalie Amelia Brann made seven saves.
