Customers at the U.S. Post Office in Gray got a surprise Monday afternoon when a driver lost control of her car and crashed into the building at 10 Turnpike Acres Road.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Gray Fire/EMS were notified around 2:26 p.m. that a car had struck the building. The driver was identified as 90-year-old Marquerite Quimby of Gray, Capt. Kerry Joyce of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

Investigators said that Quimby’s 2020 Honda Accord failed to stop in a designated handicapped parking spot and drove onto the sidewalk, where it hit a structural pillar, a newspaper stand and the building. Her vehicle continued on the sidewalk beside the building before striking a legally parked vehicle head on.
Sary Peng, 42, of New Gloucester was sitting in the parked car, a 2009 Honda Civic, but was not injured. Quimby was evaluated by medics and did not require medical treatment.
Joyce said the cause of the crash was failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.
