Mary M. Cobb
PORTLAND – Mary M. Cobb, 86, a lifelong resident of Portland, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 28, 2023 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
Mary was born in Portland on Oct. 22, 1936, the daughter of the late James J. and Catherine C. (McGonagle) Cobb. She attended local schools on Munjoy Hill and graduated from Cathedral High School in the class of 1954.
In her early years, Mary worked for U.S. Fidelity and Guarantee Company for several years as secretary to the Claims Superintendent. Being interested in travel, she joined the staff of North West Travel Agency where she became manager of the agency and in that position she served for over 20 years. After her retirement from the agency, she worked as the receptionist at the law office of Joe Bornstein. Mary also, as a volunteer, taught English and reading to refugee children from the Sudan. She had a special talent as a baker and cake decorator and she loved music and dancing.
Mary had many good friends supporting her during her lengthy illness, especially her only sister Betty.
Mary was one, who all her life, put the needs of her family and friends before her own. She was truly a caring and giving person. She kept abreast of world news and was passionate about social justice issues and politics.
Mary is survived by her sister, Sr. Elizabeth Cobb R.S.M. of Springvale.
Visiting hours celebrating Mary’s life will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, ME. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. on Monday, May 8, 2023 followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland.
