After all the school shootings and other mass shootings, including one that put my town on a shelter-in-place order April 18, it is now time for all those good guys with guns to take a stand. Demonstrate how you care about America by advocating for reasonable gun reforms.
Please distinguish yourselves from gun extremists who believe any restrictions on gun ownership is a “slippery slope” to the government taking all your guns away. If you’re a reasonable person who uses a gun for hunting or for home defense, why should you mind if you have to pass a background check, complete a waiting period, register your weapon and have a license to prove your ability to safely store and use your weapons? Why should you want high capacity magazines or assault weapons? The answer is you should not.
We unfortunately have none of these laws in Maine currently. But a culture of gun safety should be what all Americans, gun owners included, should strive for.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
