Robert “Bob” W. Flaherty
CAPE ELIZABETH – Robert “Bob” W. Flaherty, 90, died on April 19, 2023 at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough.
Bob was born on April 1, 1933 to Richard C. and Alice L. (Harkins) Flaherty in Portland. He grew up on Whitney Avenue and attended St. Patrick’s Grammar School, Cheverus High School for two years, as well as Portland High School for two years.
After graduation, Bob joined the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Japan for two of those years. After the service, he worked for Portland Copper Railway Express and the Nissens Baking Co. for 29 years, retiring in 1995.
Bob met the love of his life, Wilhelmina “Willie” Strobl. They married on Oct. 15, 1958 and stayed married for over 64 years. They had two children, Darlene and Rob; two grandchildren, Alana and Alex; and two great-grandsons. Bob and Willie went to Germany a few times to visit Willie’s family. Everyone loved him over there. Bob was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan.
The family wants to extend a thank you to “our annoying friend”, Cathy Rand, who helped take care of Bob for the past year. Bob loved Cathy, but loved her a little less when she made him do his exercises. They also want to thank the staff at the Maine Veterans’ Home. Bob received the best care and loved everyone there.
Bob was predeceased by his parents; brother, Dick and sister-in-law, Mary.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Wilhelmina “Willie” Flaherty; daughter, Darlene, son, Rob; grandchildren, Alana and Alex; two great-grandchildren; other extended family members and friends.
