Joan (Kuenzig) Gomes

SACO – Joan (Kuenzig) Gomes, 85, of Hillview Avenue passed away peacefully on Wednesday April 26, 2023 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

Joan was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Feb. 13, 1938 the daughter of the late Joseph and Edith (Taylor) Kuenzig. She attended local schools in Pittsburgh, Pa. and the graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in microbiology.

As an adult she attended the University of New York in medical technology but she much preferred cooking lunches and her famous lunch creations known throughout the Northern Catskills. She specialized in lunches so she could be home with her family at supper time. She is considered a master crafter, knit socks are a welcome Christmas present. Everyone in the family has a monogramed Christmas stocking to hang by the fireplace thanks to Aunt Joanie.

A home on Great Diamond Island drew her to Maine in the summers and a home in Smithfield, N.C. kept her out of major down east snow storms, but Saco was her favorite. Joan enjoyed games, puzzles and family gatherings.

Joan was predeceased by a daughter, Crystal Gomes.

She is survived by her husband, Edmund Gomes of Saco; two daughters, Sharon (Harry) Latsch of Pennsylvania, Holly (David) Kennedy of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Caleb and Sarah Kennedy, Cory and Christopher Latsch and Katie Long; great-grandmother to four; sisters-in-law, Jeanne (Jim) Fenton of Portland and Ruth (Robert) Kuenzig of Pennsylvania; beloved by many nieces and nephews.
