Lois C. Stack

PORTLAND – Proudly independent throughout her 91 years, Lois C. Stack died peacefully in her home in Portland on March 23, 2023 with family at her side.

She married James J. Stack, her high school sweetheart, in 1954 and began a family and 63 years of adventures together until his passing in 2016.

She graduated from North Central College, Naperville, Ill. and received master’s and doctorate degrees in Psychology from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn. in 1970 and 1972 respectively.

In 1972 they moved to Fayetteville, N.Y. outside of Syracuse. She became Director of Research in social psychology at Hutchings Psychiatric Center, and later, Associate Professor of Psychology at Syracuse University and an instructor at the Upstate Medical Center School of Nursing.

Lois and Jay also loved to travel and together they explored over 30 countries from Europe to Japan and South America.

She served as President of the Syracuse Rose Society, was an active member of the Social Arts Club, and a docent at the Everson Museum. In 2014, Jay and Lois moved to the Atrium at the Cedars in Portland.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law; her sister, brother- and sister-in-law; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews across the USA.
