An intense fire heavily damaged a Scarborough home Friday afternoon, according to the Scarborough Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to 67 Gorham Road around 12:30 p.m. and when they arrived at the scene “fire was shooting through the roof,” department spokesman John Brennan said Saturday.

The homeowners were not present when the fire broke out, Brennan said, but two pets, a dog and a parrot, are missing.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy fire in the rear of the home. They were forced out of the building due to high heat and flames, and crews were not able to enter until the fire was knocked down, Brennan said.

The cause was unknown, Brennan said, adding that the heaviest fire was in the rear of the home’s basement and attic. The fire is under investigation by the Scarborough Fire Department, and does not appear to be suspicious, Brennan said.

Mutual aid to the Scarborough Fire Department was provided by Portland, South Portland, and Biddeford firefighters.
