Jeremiah Jenkins singled home Jake Rainess in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Maine to a 9-8 win over UMass Lowell for a baseball doubleheader sweep Friday in Orono.
Maine (11-11, 5-0 America East) won its home opener, 9-3, with the help of a six-run second inning that included a two-run single by Quinn McDaniel and a two-run double by Jenkins. Colin Fitzgerald limited the River Hawks (4-19, 0-5) to four hits and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings.
In Game 2, Dylan McNary belted a three-run homer and Connor Goodman hit a three-run double as the Black Bears scored eighth runs in the fourth inning for an 8-1 lead. Lowell rallied, though, and eventually tied the game in the seventh inning.
TUFTS 9, BATES 5: Tyler Attal hit a two-run homer and Noah Jankowski smacked a two-run double for Bates (8-5, 0-1 NESCAC), but Tufts (8-5, 1-0) scored four runs in the eighth inning to beat the Bobcats in Medford, Massachusetts.
Bates also got a solo home run Drew Fallon. Henry Jamieson was 3 for 3.
CC OF RHODE ISLAND 3, SOUTHERN MAINE CC 0: Justin Colon and Anthony Sayers each hit a double for SMCC (6-8) in a loss to CCRI (6-8) at Warwick, Rhode Island.
SOFTBALL
MAINE SPLITS: Kelby Drews hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and a walk-off RBI single in the eighth as Maine (8-21, 1-3 America East) took a 7-6 win in Game 1 of a doubleheader before getting no-hit by Albany (10-9, 1-1) in an 8-0 loss at Orono.
In the opener, Mariah Pearson singled home Jasmine Gray in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, and the Black Bears scored three runs in the eighth after giving up two runs in the top half. Grace McGouldrick led Maine with four hits, and Drews and Pearson each collected three hits.
Albany’s Kate Powers struck out three and walked two in a six-inning no-hitter in Game 2.
ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS: Meredith Pence pitched a five-hitter in the opener, and St. Joseph’s (8-8, 2-0 GNAC) used a six-run third inning to take control in the second game as the Monks swept Anna Maria (3-12, 0-2) in Standish, 3-0 and 9-1.
Sylvia Foley singled home the go-ahead run in both games. Lydia Goodnough collected two hits in each game and scored three runs – two in the second game.
BOWDOIN SPLITS: Chloe Garcia had two hits and two RBI as Bowdoin (10-10, 3-3 NESCAC) earned a doubleheader split against Williams (5-9, 1-1) with a 7-2 victory in a game shortened to five innings because of darkness in Brunswick.
Lilly Armstrong also had two hits, including an RBI double.
Williams won the opener, 8-5.
COLBY SPLITS: Courtney Schumacher doubled in the sixth inning and eventually scored the winning on a groundout by KC DeSarno as Colby (10-6, 1-1 NESCAC) earned a doubleheader split against Hamilton (12-8, 4-2) with a 3-2 victory in Game 2, at Waterville.
Chloe Wilcox went 3 for 4 in the second game, including a two-run double in the first inning. Abby Orso got the win with two hitless innings in relief of Sam Ahlholm.
Hamilton won the opener, 7-1. Colby’s Carissa Cassidy was 3 for 3 with an RBI triple.
MEN’S LACROSSE
MASS. MARITIME 20, SOUTHERN MAINE 11: Omar Contreras led USM (2-7) with four goals in a loss to the Buccaneers (4-3) in Buzzards Bay, Mass.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
AWARDS: Purdue center Zach Edey was a near-unanimous choice as The Associated Press Player of the Year, receiving all but one vote from a 58-person media panel, with Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis getting the other.
The 7-foot-4 Canadian finished sixth nationally in scoring (22.3), second in rebounding (12.8), and first in double-doubles (26).
Marquette’s Shaka Smart received the Coach of the Year award, garnering 24 of 58 votes to edge Kansas State’s Jerome Tang, who received 13 votes. Houston’s Kelvin Sampson got 10 votes.
FLORIDA ATLANTIC: Dusty May confirmed reports that he will remain at the school with a long-term deal, saying it “never was that tempting” to look elsewhere for jobs after the Owls’ unexpected Final Four run.
The Palm Beach Post reported that May would sign a multiyear contract worth more than $1 million annually.
Florida Atlantic meets San Diego State in Saturday’s national semifinals.
TEXAS TECH: Grant McCasland was hired as Texas Tech’s new coach, getting a six-year contract with the Red Raiders a day after his North Texas team won the NIT to wrap up that school’s first 30-win season.
North Texas was 135-65 in six seasons under McCasland, who has a master’s degree from Texas Tech. The Mean Green were 31-7 this season, which came a year after they broke the school record by winning 25 games.
KANSAS: Gradey Dick is entering the NBA draft after one season with the Jayhawks.
The 6-foot-8 guard started all 36 games this season and averaged 14.1 points while shooting better than 40% from 3-point range.
