A Portland public schools parent has made an anonymous donation of $250,000 to the school district to enrich music, visual and performing arts programs.
The district said in a release Tuesday that the donor reached out to Andi Summers, executive director of the Foundation for Portland Public Schools, to discuss a gift that would have a meaningful impact on students and address a significant need.
The parent, who wishes to remain anonymous, said their kids attended a neighborhood school. Though the kids had a positive experience, the parent noticed resource challenges, especially in the visual and performing arts programs.
“This donation is a game changer for our arts programs,” Summer said. “It will bring a range of new opportunities to Portland students. We know that making music and art benefits mental health and engages kids in school. For many, it’s the highlight of their day.”
Summers said the Foundation for Portland Public Schools launched a music and arts fundraising campaign in the fall of 2022 in response to feedback from teachers and community members. The campaign focused on updating the district’s aging collection of musical instruments for students who can’t afford to rent or buy their own.
Summers said the need for instruments is just one example of the district’s lack of resources for music, art and drama programs.
