Stanley I. Whitney

INDIAN HARBOUR BEACH, Fla. – Stanley I. Whitney, 85, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Indian Harbour Beach, Fla. on March 14, 2023, with his devoted wife, Sharon, by his side. He had been battling a degenerative neurological disease for the last few years.

Born on July 7, 1937, in North Yarmouth, Stan was one of Alphonso and Laura Whitney’s 10 children. He graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in 1955 and joined the U.S. Air Force in August of the same year.

After returning home to Maine in May 1960, Stan met the love of his life, Mary Sharon Catterson, and they married on June 24, 1961. They were blessed with two sons.

Stan worked, starting as a line mechanic at Fairchild Semiconductor in the 1960s and advanced to quality manager, later deciding to pursue a career in real estate and worked as a realtor for Harnden Realty. In retirement, he worked for Walmart in Melbourne, Florida.

Having grown up on a farm, Stan never lost his love for gardening and his passion for making things grow is reflected in the flowers and landscaping of every home he has had. He loved to tease, and no one he cared about was beyond his reach. His sense of humor was infectious, and all his family inherited his love of laughter and quick wit. He was a mentor, teacher, role model, advice giver, and a man of the strongest faith.

Raised as a Baptist, Stan converted to Catholicism late in life and was an active member of the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Community, where he was confirmed in 2016 at the age of 79. He frequently spoke at the men’s groups and served as a sponsor for candidates seeking conversion.

Stan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Sharon; and his two sons, Thomas Scott Whitney and his wife Maureen Pyne Whitney of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., and Timothy Charles Whitney and his wife Nawshi Islam Whitney of Lewisville, Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Nellie Campbell, his brother, Warren F. Whitney; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Grampa will be greatly missed by his family who were always at the center of his life. Lovingly remembering him are his six grandchildren, Corinne E. Jagger (Robert Jagger) of Saco, Laura M. Sargent (Joseph Sargent) of Merritt Island, Fla., Thomas Scott Whitney, Jr. (Cristina Rodrigues Whitney), Erin Whitney and fiancé Maxwell Villwock, of Melbourne, Fla., Dominique Whitney and Gabrielle Whitney of Whatley, Mass.; and six great-grandchildren, Rose Jagger, Ruth Jagger, Elizabeth Sargent, Joshua Sargent, Danielle Sargent and three-week-old, Matteo Whitney.

He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters Bertha McLellan, Thelma Croteau, Lucille Johnson, Marian Whitney, and his brothers Herbert, Elmer, and Alton Whitney.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on March 23 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Indialantic, Fla., followed by burial in the Memorial Garden. Visitation starts at 1 p.m. The services will be livestreamed for the benefit of family and friends.
