Marie-Geneviève Galland-Dodin

FALMOUTH – Marie-Geneviève Galland-Dodin died Oct. 23, 2022, at age 98. She had been living independently in Portland until she was 96 before entering the health care facility at Falmouth by the Sea.

Marie was born Feb. 22, 1924 in Roubaix, France. Marie graduated from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, France before moving to the United States in 1951. Marie taught Art at the Waynflete School in Portland, Maine for many years. She obtained a Master of Science in Art Education from the University of Southern Maine and worked with children with special needs. Marie won the Court of Honor Prize for her batiks from the American Craftsman Council and gave a batik demonstration to First Lady “Lady Bird” Johnson in 1968. In 2005, Marie was elected to of the “Artistes Roubaisiens” group, Roubaix, France.

Marie joined the Peace Corps for two terms of service in Tunisia (1993 – 1995), in and the Dominican Republic (1999 – 2001). She was a member of the Alliance Française du Maine, and was a long-term volunteer at Reiche School in Portland, using her French and Arabic language skills to help new arrivals transition to the city.

Marie is survived by her two sons, Millan and Voyan; granddaughters Anastasia and Olivia; and great-granddaughters Romilly and Augustine.

As Marie was during her lifetime, the family is grateful to friends who provided a bond among women artists and teachers in so many places, and the staff at Falmouth-by-the-Sea.
