Margaret Ann (Hawkes) St. Pierre

RAYMOND – On March 6, 2023, Margaret passed peacefully in her daughter’s home surrounded by her loving family.

Margaret was born on Oct. 27, 1942 in Waterville to Rev. Kenneth C. Hawkes and A. June (Wheeler) Hawkes. Margaret graduated from North Andover High School in Massachusetts in 1960.

From the time she was a small child, Margaret was horse crazy. She saved every penny she made, and with her father’s approval, she was able to buy her first horse when she was just a teenager. Margaret’s love of horses never faded. She spent her life raising, breeding, boarding, training, and showing horses. She was a charter member of the Cumberland County Riding Club and served as their secretary in the 1960s. She worked at the Scarborough Downs Race Track for many years and gave riding lessons to young and old throughout her career.

Margaret brought one of her many dreams to life when she orchestrated an annual horse show called “The World of Horses” at the Cumberland Fairgrounds where children and adults could show off their best equine friend to music and a fully decorated stadium of horse lovers. She included all different breeds and categories including therapeutic riding. Margaret even retired a police horse or two during the show which happens annually at the Cumberland County Fair.

The highlight of Margaret’s career was riding to the state championship in 1972 on her best equine friend, the nationally known Morgan Stallion “Springdale King” (known to family as Terry). She and her husband built a barn for him “Springdale Farm” at their family home on Blackstrap Road in Falmouth where they raised their daughters and she resided for nearly 60 years. When Terry’s show days were over, Margaret spent countless hours trail riding Terry through the woods and trails of Blackstrap Hill.

In 1989, Margaret opened up Springdale Farm New and Used Tack Shop where she outfitted kids who had the same passion and love of horses that she had as a child. During her career she outfitted three generations of families and made it affordable for all of them as well. Her grandchildren never left she shop without a hand painted horse trinket or a new pair of cowboy boots.

Margaret was an artist and a cartoonist. In 2015 she illustrated and published a book called “Pancakes and Stirrup” a witty cartoon book for horse lovers. Margaret was also a gardener. She took great pride in her beautiful daffodil beds that ran half the length of her Falmouth property. She was always pleased to see people stop to take a look, a picture, or even to snip one or two thinking no one could see. Springdale Farm was her dream and her life.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Roland, her ex-husband and dear friend, Richard St. Pierre and their daughter Patricia St. Pierre.

Surviving are her sister, Carolyn (Hawkes) Gaines and her husband Charles of Tuscon, Ariz.; a daughter, Karen (St. Pierre) Crawford and her husband Jeffrey of Raymond; two grandchildren, Mason St. Pierre and his wife Kelli, and Jessica Brum and her husband Asa; along with five great-grandchildren, Jack, Juliette, Arlo, Avery, and Niko.
