SACO — Mary’s Walk, the annual event that began in 1999 to honor the late Mary Kerry Libby by raising funds and awareness for the Maine Cancer Foundation steps off from Thornton Academy in Saco on Sunday, March 19.
“On the day” registration for this 25th anniversary Mary’s Walk begins at 10:30 a.m., the opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m. and the walk starts at noon.
Her family began Mary’s Walk in 1999. Mary Libby was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma on July 5, 1996, and died eight months later, on March 7, 1997. She was 46, and the mother of four children. An avid walker, she was known in the community for her friendly smile, gracious charm, and kind demeanor.
More than $4 million has been raised to help the Maine Cancer Foundation help others since the race’s inception.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
