NEWPORT — Investigators from the Office of State Fire Marshal were at the scene Sunday of a house fire in Newport that killed one of the home’s occupants.
Firefighters and other emergency workers from across the Newport area were called to 578 Mullen Road before noon for a report of a structure fire.
According to the Maine Department of Public Safety, a mother and son lived at the two-story house.
The mother, who owned the house, survived. Her son, Allen Easley, 54, died.
The Fire Marshal’s Office was called Sunday morning to investigate the blaze in the town in southern Penobscot County.
Mullen Road was reportedly closed to traffic as tankers from area fire departments ferried water to the fire scene. Ambulances were also dispatched.
Mullen Road, which is also state Route 222, runs through the northern part of the town and connects Corinna and Stetson.
Newport’s mutual aid partners — Corinna, Pittsfield, Plymouth and St. Albans — responded, as did firefighters from Carmel, Detroit, Dexter and Etna to either help fight the fire or cover fire stations.
Some firefighters were reportedly at the scene until about 5 p.m.
