I am a 70-year-old Maine resident with a federal pension. Due to recent Maine legislation, I was able to reduce my taxable income by $25,000 because my income was from a pension. Although I am happy with this exemption, my objection is: Why is my pension income getting this exemption and younger taxpayers with earned income do not get the same reduction? To me, income is income, no matter the source. This only hurts younger Maine taxpayers, it seems discriminatory to treat income sources differently.
This and other programs like the Property Tax Stabilization Program negatively impact younger Maine residents. Younger people are being hurt by these programs to help the elderly.
Time for younger residents to pay attention to laws enacted by our Legislature and the governor.
