Cape Elizabeth’s Pond Cove Elementary school suffered flooding on the night of Sunday, Feb. 26.
Due to a broken segment of the heating system, parts of the school were flooded. Some areas of the building were seriously damaged while others remained unscathed. The compromised part of the heating system is now being replaced and the school’s facilities, custodial, and maintenance teams are cleaning and improving the damaged areas.
On Feb. 27, the town’s school department canceled classes for students in the first and second grade, and one kindergarten class. The school is now functional again for all students in grades K-4.
Assistant Principal Sarah Forrey-Pettit wrote a message to the students’ parents on Feb. 27, explaining the situation and thanking those working to fix it. “It was heartwarming to see everyone jump in and offer to do whatever was needed,” Forrey-Pettit wrote. “Pond Cove is certainly a special place to be, especially in times like these.”
The school remains functional while repairs are underway, with one first-grade classroom being moved to the library temporarily.
