Voting available for Black History Month Art Contest

UScellular and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine are holding their sixth annual Black History Month Art Contest. Children from the club have created original artwork depicting influential Black contributors to the world’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These subjects include world leaders, scientists, historical figures, educators, and more.

“We are excited to be celebrating Black History Month with our members and are so appreciative to once again have UScellular celebrating with us,” said Erin Giwer, senior program director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine. “The annual art contest encourages our young members to express themselves in meaningful and intentional ways as they reflect on elements of Black history that are significant in their lives.”

Club representatives chose 10 finalists based on quality, creativity, interpretation, clarity of theme, and overall impression.

Voting for the contest is available online at https://newsroom.uscellular.com/uscellular-2023-black-history-month-art-contest/ through Feb. 28 to anyone 18 or older from the Southern Maine area.

“We are excited to celebrate Black History Month with our sixth annual art contest with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine,” said Evan Travers, store manager for UScellular in Scarborough. “The talented youth at Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine will have a chance to showcase their creativity and hopefully learn more about the successes that Black people have achieved in STEM.”

Results will be announced in March. Gift cards for $250, $150, and $100 will be awarded to the three with the most votes.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine is thrilled to have partners like UScellular who help us promote learning, cultural understanding, and artistic talent,” Giwer said. “The annual UScellular Black History Month Art Contest is one of the many ways we celebrate Black History Month. This contest allows our members to learn in a hands-on way about Black leaders in STEM whose innovations impact all our lives.”
