SHAPLEIGH – William “Bill” Garceau unexpectedly passed away on Feb. 11, 2023 after a brief illness. Bill was born in Old Town on March 14, 1958 to Grace and Ernest Garceau. Bill was a gifted cabinetmaker and furniture designer. In more recent years he worked as a computer systems facilitator. Bill had a lifelong love of music. He played guitar and enjoyed all music, especially the musicians of the ‘60s and ‘70s. He loved nature and the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were excuses to get outside and enjoy it all. He would let a deer walk by or throw a fish back because he had respect for nature and living things…except for those darn squirrels. Hunting and fishing provided fodder for stories that he and his friend Kerry retold many times. Bill and Martha enjoyed the peace and quiet of their life down a long driveway in Shapleigh, growing vegetables in the summer and watching the wildlife. Bill was much loved and will be missed by his wife Martha; daughter, Megan Garceau of South Portland, Ethan Garceau and fiancé Kayla Malzac, and Dylan Garceau of Bar Harbor. There are no formal services planned. A Celebration of Life for close family and friends will be held in the Spring.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
