Get a leg up on riding

A program for horseback riding and horsemanship begins later this month at Hearts and Horses, 63 Justin Merrill Road in Buxton.

The program includes lessons for riding and grooming, as well as crafts and “fun horse-related” activities, according to the Gorham Recreation Department.

The first session is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, during the February school break, and another on Thursday, April 20, during the spring break. They cost $95 for each day.

Participants are advised to wear long pants, proper riding footwear – boots or shoes with heels – hats, gloves and foot warmers. Take a lunch, snack and a water bottle. Riding helmets will be provided at the farm.

Mary Poppins at GHS

The Gorham High School production of the musical “Mary Poppins,” directed by Joshua Hurd, continues with performances through this weekend.

Shows are at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, and Saturday, Feb. 11, and conclude with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12.

The American Journal reported on Feb. 14, 1973, that Clifford Mains, master of Boy Scout Troop 73 in the village, announced a Court of Honor to be held in the parish house at the First Parish Congregational Church.
