A 27-year-old woman died early Tuesday morning when she was hit by an Amtrak Downeaster train traveling south through Biddeford.
The Biddeford Regional Communications Center received a call at 5:44 a.m. from the train engineer reporting that a pedestrian had been struck south of the Main Street railroad crossing.
The woman died at the scene, according to Biddeford’s interim police chief, JoAnne Fisk. The name of the woman will not be released until her next of kin is notified.
There were no reported injuries among the crew or 28 passengers on board, according to Amtrak. The train had just stopped in Saco to pick up passengers, Fisk said.
Amtrak train 680 was traveling from Brunswick to Haverhill, Massachusetts. The company is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.
Main Street in Biddeford was blocked for several hours Tuesday morning as authorities investigated. Amtrak canceled two trains and additional delays were expected.
In May 2022, two people died when they were struck by an Amtrak Downeaster train near Main Street in Biddeford. Police determined Richard Martello, 24, and Shawnia Maffiola, 23, died by suicide.
