The University of Maine football team named Steve Cooper its offensive coordinator on Tuesday.

Cooper joins a team that finished 2-9 in Coach Jordan Stevens’ first season.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Steve Cooper to the University of Maine,” said Stevens. “Steve is a leader and outstanding coach. I look forward to working with him to develop our players.”

Cooper replaces Andrew Dresner, who was named the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Stony Brook last week.

Cooper previously spent five seasons at the University of Nebraska, where he served as offensive quality control/quarterbacks coach. He spent five seasons with the Cornhuskers in various offensive roles.

He also coached for eight seasons at Portland State, including three seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Cooper played for one season at Oregon State, before finishing his career with three seasons as a wide receiver at Portland State.

OKLAHOMA STATE: Oklahoma State announced it has hired Bryan Nardo as defensive coordinator.

Nardo was defensive coordinator at Division II Gannon University this past season. In his only season at the school in Erie, Pennsylvania, Gannon saw its total defense improve from 393.3 yards allowed per game in 2021 to 287.4 – the school’s lowest total surrendered in 20 seasons.

Oklahoma State’s previous defensive coordinator, Derek Mason, announced on social media last week that he was stepping down and taking a sabbatical from football.

TENNESSEE: Tennessee gave Coach Josh Heupel a big raise that puts him among the highest-paid coaches in college football after he led the Volunteers to their best season in more than 20 years.

Heupel will make $9 million per year through the 2028 football season under the contract extension announced by the school and signed Jan. 19. That’s an increase from the $5 million extension signed last July that pushed his deal through 2027.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BOWDOIN 97, THOMAS 66: Xander Workman had 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Polar Bears (8-11) raced to an early 10-1 lead and never looked back in a victory over the Terriers (3-14) in Waterville.

Nolan Bessire, James McGowan and Michael Simonds each contributed 11 points for Bowdoin. Alex Halpern had 10 and seven assists.

Parker Desjardins led Thomas with 15 points and James Phelan had 11.

ENDICOTT 95, U. OF NEW ENGLAND 70: Jalen Echevarria led six Gulls (11-6, 7-3 CCC) in double figures with 15 points in a win over the Nor’easters (2-15, 0-10) in Beverly, Massachusetts.

Dillon Grant, Parker McLaren and Ty Vitko each added 11 points for Endicott. Drew Brown had 10 points.

Jayden Thornton scored a game-high 16 points for UNE. Zach Boulay had 12 and Adrian Torres had 11.

(11) TCU 79, OKLAHOMA 52: Mike Miles Jr. scored 23 points and host TCU (16-4, 5-3 Big 12) led throughout in a beating Oklahoma (11-9, 2-6).

Even without injured big man Eddie Lampkin Jr., the Horned Frogs followed up their 23-point win at then-No. 2 Kansas by scoring the game’s first 11 points back at home.

(20) MIAMI 86, FLORIDA STATE 63: Nijel Pack and Isaiah Wong scored 18 points apiece as visiting Miami (16-4, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) cruised to a win over Florida State (7-14, 5-5).

Norchad Omier had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Hurricanes, who halted a nine-game slide to the Seminoles.

Caleb Mills scored 12 points, the 12th straight game he has scored 10 or more points for Florida State.

GREEN BAY: Green Bay fired Coach Will Ryan, three days after the Phoenix suffered their 11th consecutive loss.

Ryan, the son of former Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan, posted a 15-61 record in 2 1/2 seasons. Freddie Owens, who had been an assistant coach on Ryan’s staff, will be interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Green Bay dropped to 2-19 overall and 1-9 in the Horizon League on Saturday with a 72-38 home loss to Robert Morris.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 77, ENDICOTT 69: Faye Veilleux scored 32 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Nor’easters (13-5, 9-2 Commonwealth Coast) used a 15-7 closing run to outlast the Gulls (7-411, 5-6) in overtime at Beverly, Massachusetts.

Keagan Dunbar added 19 points for UNE.

Sarah Dempsey had 15 points to lead four Endicott players in double figures.

COLBY 82, THOMAS 48: Lili Nagy made four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points and nine rebounds as the Mules (6-10) handled the Terriers (2-16) at  Waterville.

Carter Mcgloon had 14 points and 14 rebounds for Colby. Lauren Cho added 13.

Samantha Fortin’s nine points and six rebounds were highs for Thomas.

MEN’S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 4, SUFFOLK 0: Bobby Pearl scored with 1:49 to play in the first period to break a scoreless tie as the Polar Bears (11-5-1) blanked the Rams (5-10-2) in nonconference play at Brunswick.

Ethan Kimball, Chris Brown and Ean Small also scored for Bowdoin.

Cal Wilcox made 27 saves for Suffolk, and Kevin Clark 25 shots faced for the Polar Bears.

COLBY 1, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Kadin Ilott opened the scoring midway through the first period for the Huskies (4-14-2), but Ryan Doolin countered for the Mules (9-6-2) in the second in a tie at Gorham.

CJ Hapward had 22 saves for Colby, and Mason Palmer made 29 saves for Southern Maine.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 2, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 2: Piper Desorcie had a pair of goals in the final 1:53 of regulation as the Nor’easters (7-10-1) rallied  to tie the Polar Bears (7-9-1) at Biddeford.

Kiley Briland and Anyi Sun scored for Bowdoin.

Delaney Corcoran made 44 saves for UNE, and Meagan Miranda stopped 26 shots for the Polar Bears.
